How to massage your scalp

If you have ever had a scalp massage, you probably remember the feeling of relaxation it provides. In addition to relieving stress and tension, it is said that scalp massages can promote hair growth.

Is this a myth or an added benefit of scalp massage? Although research is limited, this theory may be promising, depending on your hair growth needs.

What is a scalp massage?

A scalp massage is similar to a neck, back, or body massage. However, a scalp massage is generally performed a bit more gently. It is usually done without oil, but you can include some if you prefer.

A typical scalp massage is done using only the fingertips. It is also possible to use a scalp massager that mimics the pressure applied by the fingertips.

Can it promote hair growth?

According to a small 2016 study, researchers concluded that regular scalp massages can lead to thicker hair.

Additional research conducted in 2019 confirmed these results. This study was based on survey responses from 340 participants who had followed specific instructions by performing scalp massages twice a day to improve hair loss.

According to self-reported results, approximately 69% of participants stated that their alopecia had improved.

The benefits of a scalp massage for hair growth are centered on the hair follicles. Each hair on your head begins its life in a follicle, located just below the skin of your scalp.

According to research, scalp massage increases hair thickness by stretching the cells of the hair follicles. This then stimulates the follicles to produce thicker hair. It is also believed that a scalp massage can help dilate blood vessels under the skin, thereby promoting hair growth.

How to massage your scalp

There are several ways to massage your scalp to stimulate hair growth. Here are four options.

1. Traditional scalp massage

A traditional scalp massage involves using only the fingertips.

Use the fingertips of both hands to apply light to medium pressure to your scalp, moving in small circles.

Work your way around your scalp to cover all areas.

Try to massage your scalp with your fingertips for at least 5 minutes at a time, several times a day.

2. Massage while you wash your hair

If you are short on time, you can use the traditional scalp massage method described above while you wash your hair.

With your fingertips, gently massage your hair with your shampoo or conditioner for 5 minutes. Then rinse your hair as usual.

3. Brushes and massage tools

As with body massages, there are also special tools you can buy to massage your scalp.

Although some dermatologists recommend using a scalp massager, others believe that a fingertip massage is just as effective. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide which method works best for you.

Scalp massage tools come in the form of brushes or lightweight handheld rubber massagers. You can use them all over your scalp the same way you would with your fingers.

4. Scalp massage with essential oils

You can also use essential oils during your scalp massage. Studies have shown that lavender and peppermint oils may promote hair growth.

Mix 1 to 2 drops of lavender or peppermint oil with 1 tablespoon of a carrier oil, such as jojoba or melted coconut oil. Apply directly to your scalp, then use your fingertips or a scalp massager to gently work the oils into your scalp.

Before applying any essential oil to your scalp, first do a patch test on a small area of your skin to ensure that you are not allergic.
