What is momme?

According to the informative website of "La Maison de la Soie," it is a Japanese unit of measurement. It allows for the evaluation of silk density and thus defines the quality of the fabric. Indeed, by going from 1 to 22 mommes, we move from 4.3056 g/m² to 94.7232 g/m².

Moreover, to determine the quality of a fabric, such as cotton, one looks at the thread count used. In the case of silk, this criterion would be insufficient. Indeed, two silk fabrics can have the same thread count without being of the same quality.
