Seasonal hair loss: how to limit shedding?

Every year, at the same time, we find more hair in our brush, on our pillow, or at the bottom of the shower. Don't panic: seasonal hair loss is a natural and temporary phenomenon. It affects both women and men, generally at the end of summer and the beginning of autumn, between September and October.

But why does our hair fall out more during this period? We'll explain everything.

1. Why does hair fall out more at the start of the school year?

During the summer, our scalp is exposed to multiple stress factors:

  • the sun, which weakens the hair fiber,

  • sea salt and chlorine, which dry out the lengths,

  • and temperature changes, which disrupt the scalp.

These summer aggressions accelerate the end of the hair life cycle. The result: at the start of the season, many hairs reach the shedding phase (the telogen phase), which creates a peak in hair loss for a few weeks.

No need to worry: this is simply natural renewal, not permanent alopecia.

2. The role of stress and hormonal changes

The return to the daily grind is also synonymous with a faster pace, fatigue, and sometimes stress—three elements that can accentuate hair loss.
Furthermore, hormonal variations (particularly in women) influence hair growth.
A period of stress, a lack of sleep, or an iron deficiency can prolong this shedding phase and delay regrowth.

3. How to limit seasonal shedding?

Fortunately, a few simple actions can help strengthen the hair fiber and stimulate regrowth:

  • Regularly massage your scalp to stimulate blood circulation and promote the supply of nutrients.

  • Adopt a diet rich in iron, zinc, B vitamins, and proteins, which are essential for hair growth.

  • Limit heat and overly tight hairstyles during this sensitive period.

  • Sleep on a silk pillowcase, which reduces breakage and friction, and helps preserve the health of the hair fiber during the night.

  • Use a soft brush, preferably with natural bristles, to avoid weakening the roots.

4. Hair masks: the SOS step not to be overlooked

During this period, hair needs nourishment, hydration, and protection.
Hair masks are perfect for restoring the fiber and strengthening weakened lengths.

👉 Choose:

  • a nourishing mask based on vegetable oils (argan, coconut, castor) to repair dry or damaged hair,

  • a strengthening mask rich in keratin, proteins, or plant extracts to stimulate growth,

  • a moisturizing mask if your hair is dull or dehydrated after the summer.

Tip: leave the mask on under a silk hair cap or night bonnet to retain natural heat and boost the penetration of active ingredients.

5. Patience: hair grows back!

Good news: this seasonal shedding lasts on average 4 to 6 weeks.
The hair that falls out makes way for new, stronger, and shinier hair.
With a little patience, an adapted routine, and a healthy lifestyle, your hair will quickly regain its natural density.

Hair loss is a normal phenomenon, often linked to the change of season and lifestyle.
The main thing is to preserve the fiber, stimulate the scalp, and take care of yourself.
Because healthy hair always starts with a soothed scalp and restful sleep.
